Aims The biomarkers representing the metastatic potential of well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma remain to be established. A study was undertaken find whether expression status neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) and/or ovarian cancer immunoreactive antigen domain containing 1 (OCIAD1) is associated with differentiated carcinoma. Methods NCAM and OCIAD1 were analysed by immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays. Results Among 214 carcinomas, 68 patients had distant metastases. Immunohistochemical analyses showed that majority benign lesions expressed while a significant proportion carcinomas lost or reduced expression. Both follicular papillary metastasis significantly higher frequency preserving Hierarchical clustering analysis differential between malignant lesions. overall metastatic-to-localised tumour ratio in NCAM-expressing clusters, but difference ratios OCIAD1-positive OCIAD1-negative subclusters not significant.
